Mudroom Makeover

As the everyday entry point for our home, the mudroom project aimed to create a functional landing zone for all the items in need of a good home: keys, shoes, bags, etc.

All in, this makeover was around $600 total – our builder wanted $2500 for the upgraded mudroom including boot bench and cabinet, so I’d day this was a #win. Like a true rookie, I forgot to take a before picture – but luckily this doesn’t require too much imagination: it began as a plain white box of a space.

OUR PROCESS
  • JR began the makeover by cutting the trim and placing the cabinet

  • He then framed out the boot bench and nailed plywood on for the surface and sides

  • We painted the bench interior, exterior, and trim

  • JR cut the butcher block countertops to fit the cabinet top and benchtop, stained them with Dark Walnut, and glued them down / screwed them in from the underside.

  • Countertop and benchtop were sprayed with a poly sealant (he draped plastic to protect the room)

  • JR then framed out the panels with 1x3” MDF trim and painted both the wall and trim in Retreat by Sherwin Williams

  • We replaced the builder-grade ceiling light with a pendant lamp from IKEA that we painted with Flat Black by Rustoleum. $40 hack!

  • Time for finishing touches! Hooks in the panels, key hooks above the cabinet, a jute runner, a calendar, letter board, and mirror all come together to create a functional landing zone.

I’ve been so accustomed to the plain white room that was the mudroom that when I walked in the house from the garage the other day, the made-over mudroom surprised me! It felt so nice to walk in, pop my shoes off and hang my purse and keys in their designated places, rather than randomly dropping things in the kitchen. Plus, it looks like the dogs are enjoying the makeover, too. ;)

Also, I highly recommend a mirror in the mudroom – so nice to check my outfit one last time before heading out the door.
