Sunroom Styling

Give me all the natural light.

That is essentially my mindset when designing any space in our house. The sunroom is a 12x12’ space off our kitchen with windows that look out onto our backyard. When we initially moved in, I had placed a full-size sofa and club chair in the space to try and maximize seating for our large extended families.

Over time it became apparent that this was actually too much seating in the sunroom – when we hosted company, we rarely needed to use the space; when it was just J and I around the house, we never wandered in to sit down because it wasn’t cozy. So we listed the current furniture on Facebook marketplace and got to planning a more usable space for us: a reading room.

THE DESIGN INTENT: CREATE A ROOM I WANT TO BE IN.

The goal for the sunroom re-design was cozy and comfortable while maintaining structure as it’s centrally located in our main living space. We decided to place two reading chairs along the back wall, facing into the house, and line the side wall with a sideboard with storage for books, vinyls, etc. Josh designed and installed custom built-in shelving around the doorway giving that library feel and new home for found objects (many of our items on display were sourced from local antique stores) and our most sentimental pieces, like Josh’s home-run baseball from little league. After designing any space, I like to let it breathe for a few weeks and slowly add in finishing touches, like a few live plants and extra blankets for texture.

After flipping things around, I’m happy to report that we use the space daily, from morning coffee to evening reading, and even the occasional afternoon video conference while we’re working from home.
